Homework

There were a few quotes in Ben Highman’s Homework that I thought were interesting or relatable. The first quote is on page 307 and asks if “the routines and habits of daily life comfort you with their worn and tender familiarity”. I find this quote relatable because I tend to find comfort in routines and habits of my daily life. Towards the end of the summer, I always find myself saying, “I can’t wait for school so I can have a schedule”. I think if there’s too much routine or the same routine continues for a long period of time you can get restless and need something new, and that new, yet familiar, routine becomes comforting because it’s still familiar even though it may be a change up from your previous routine.
Another quote that can relate to the first one is on page 311 and says that “routines and habits hold on to us and we hold on to them”. I thought this was interesting because we do hold on to habits and routines; it’s what makes them habits/routines by repeatedly doing them and keeping them in our lives.

One quote that I had difficulty understanding was on page 319 that says “If everyday life suffers from neglect, such neglect should point us to a living ‘politics’ of social life. Such a politics, here at least, starts by giving voice to the dense and often invisible routine worlds of the everyday”. I understand the part about giving a voice to the invisible routine worlds, but the ‘politics’ of social life throws me off a bit.

  1. Interesting observations Audrey. I find myself thinking the exact same thing with summer and school. We want some type of structure in our lives to make it easier to handle, but doing the same routine can get boring really quick. To the quote that you had troubles with, I think that he is trying to say that we are neglecting the fact that there are routines in our everyday lives, and they are not getting the voice needed to show what is going on in our world.
